Dearest Jennifer,
Your warnings about my turning the cafeteria into a chaotic love-fest have been duly noted. As you well know, Cornfed County High School will not be accepting deliveries today.
I can't help but agree with you that it's better this way. Love shouldn't be about showing off or even necessarily expressed with material things. It should be personal and sincere. Perhaps it will be more so for more people this year. Maybe this time around, the teeny-bopper boyfriends will deliver their gifts to their teeny-bopper girlfriends in person, and because that takes more effort than simply having the florist make a delivery to the school, maybe their relationships will be less superficial and more real.
Ok, now have a chalk heart. I know that after such a sappy speech, you must be ready to vomit. But grab a handful, because I'm not finished yet. Don't be afraid to believe in love, and don't scorn others who think they've found it just because you haven't yet. After all, I believe in love. And while I may be only a fictional Roman god, love has to be real. Thousands - millions even - of tales based on a love story with a happy ending – they can't all be wrong. You yourself believe that all stories hold some twinkle of truth. So somewhere someone over the years, and I'd venture to say several million someones, has experienced love – true love, even. It's not just a figment of your imagination, and being the love god, I have to believe that it's not just a rare occurrence. Somewhere out there is some guy right for you. And maybe you won't find him today or tomorrow or the day after that, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. But don't waste your life searching either. Remember Frederick Salomon Perl's statement: “You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful. If not, it can't be helped.”
A
thousand other things exist in life worth loving besides boyfriends.
Love your family, your friends, yourself. I don't have to remind you
that those you love leave your life all too soon. Don't limit love,
because as John Lennon sang, “Love is a flower. You gotta let it
grow." And, “If your heart's strong, hold on, I won't be late.”
Hang in there.
With all my love, Cupid
I'd be remiss if I
didn't add: “P.S. I love you – you, you, you.”

True love definitely exists! You know I know it's true!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! Wish I'd know 13 years ago what was waiting for me in the future - would have saved me lots of angst. Lol. But I suppose it just makes me appreciate it all the more now that I've finally got it. :) Happy early Valentine's to you and yours!
